But I Didn't

It would be easy,
I thought,
In the pool.
One breath
Could bring quiet death.
But I didn't;
It'd tear you apart,
And I couldn't hurt you--
I'd break my own heart.

It would be quick,
I thought,
Leaning over the edge.
One crack
And I'd never come back.
But I didn't;
I thought of how you'd cry.
And I couldn't hurt you--
It'd be worse than if I died.

It would be simple,
I thought,
A blade in my hand.
One swift slice,
So smooth and nice.
But I didn't;
I knew you'd finally fall,
And I couldn't hurt you--
Not like that at all.
