Empty Space

I stand
In chilling rain drops
To take the edge off my rage;
Their sweet sting
Absorbs and dilutes
Tears of hot fury.
The heat of anger
And the coolness of the night
Cannot exist simultaneously.
They cannot be near each other.
Alone in the rain, in the night,
I only feel peace.
Each kiss of the sky's fingertips,
Brushing away my wrath,
Is another taste of freedom.
In this empty space
Between the last house
And where the sidewalk runs out
There is safety.
Not amongst the people,
Not out of their reach,
But alone;
Nobody ever thinks to look in the spaces between.
