Remembering 9/11--A Message to the World

Flags.
Flags at half mast,
Flags in yards,
Flags everywhere.
Remembering.
Remembering, as a nation, as a world,
Twin towers, 2976 lives,
Four planes.
Remembering.
And here we are,
Years later.
Still remembering.
"Oh say can you see--"
The towers fall.
Remembering.
Still we stand,
As Americans,
Tears in our eyes,
Pride in our hearts.
You aimed to break us,
Yet you made us stronger.
And we are remembering.

On this day,
Eyes turn,
Internationally.
Foreign eyes, watching,
Judging.
We know what we did,
But we did not deserve what happened.
And in your hate,
And in your judgement,
You have forgotten how to mourn.
So, look to us, world!
Americans!
Tears in our eyes!
Pride in our hearts!
Attack us, online,
Spit your words of hate.
But we are still standing.
The towers fell,
and we stand tall.
Because we are remembering.

We are remembering the lives,
The lives lost that day.
Maybe we have not been perfect,
But that is all right.
We have enemies,
Enemies who tried to break us.
And we still stand,
Americans--
Tears in our eyes,
And pride in our hearts--
Remembering.

Flags.
Flags at half-mast.
Flags in front yards.
Flags, to cry under,
For we are United.
And we are remembering.

Written September 11, 2014--13 years after Al Qaeda's attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, New York, USA. Gone, but never forgotten--Two planes struck the towers, one struck the Pentagon, and a fourth was brought down (passengers on board are believed to have overpowered terrorists) in a field in Pennsylvania.
